City Sprouts: A Youth Run Urban Farm

Did you know the average farmer in the United States is a rural white man in his 60s? This reality highlights the decline in diversity within farming and the diminishing involvement of young people in the trade. City Sprouts is a direct response to this trend, aiming to bring fresh energy and diversity to the agricultural world.
Over the course of six months, youth receive hybrid instruction on farming techniques and methods, meeting three times a week to cultivate land together. Using a zero-waste approach, City Sprouts leverages urban agriculture as a powerful tool to spark open conversations about environmental justice and climate change.
At the heart of this program is The Urban Loraxes’ free food policy, which ensures that all participants take home harvests for their homes and families throughout the season—no exceptions. This simple yet impactful gesture helps address the growing issue of food apartheid in cities across the country, providing fresh, healthy food to communities that need it most.
